| How I Typically Find Ty Nowdays...with his ears plugged. |
This image was taken with the Canon Powershot G11.
It was layered with two textures.
I got the music note texture here if you are interested.
So, why is the title of this post, "Ben Dover"
when this is clearly a picture of Ty?
Those of you who read my Facebook page
probably already know,
but for the rest of you
I will explain below.
Unfortunately a few days ago
I received a phone call home from Ty's teacher.
She was very angry at Ty and of course
the worst case scenario was running through my mind.
Ty has always been a good boy, but he is 13
and feeling mighty big for his britches lately,
so my Mom heart was pounding with fear,
waiting to hear what his offense was that
required a phone call home.
The offense?
He had written a letter to a fake person per the teacher's directions
for a social studies assignment.
He addressed his letter to a "Ben Dover."
Don't get it?
Say the name of the person very fast.
Um, yeah.
So, apparently his teacher was super angry
because she said that he addressed it to
"an obscene name."
I am not supporting what Ty did,
as he did use humor at an inappropriate time,
however I do not find the name "Ben Dover" obscene
by any stretch of the imagination.
I mean, it could have been addressed to an "Eff Ewe"
or something similar.
Now THAT would have been obscene.
I was relieved that the offense wasn't something
more severe and I had to take a step back before
deciding on what Ty's consequence would be.
After talking it through with two of my close friends
who also have teen boys,
I decided that having him redo the assignment with
an appropriate name
and then write an apology letter to the teacher
for using humor at an inappropriate time
would suffice.
Lesson learned:
Do not use 13 year old boy humor
with your social studies teacher.
*sigh*

Social to me is a boring subject, the teachers are also the same. Hope your boy need to concentrate more on social studies! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSorry Apology Letters
Sounds like this teacher takes herself far to serious! she made too much of a big deal over this. Bet it was all you could do to hold back the laughter! I think you handled it very well!
ReplyDeleteThat was pretty funny! I think his teacher needs to find her sense of humor. My friend's son (10 YO) was asked to give an example of "cause and effect" in front of the class. His answer: "John ate refried beans for lunch and they made him fart." His teacher was NOT happy either.
ReplyDeleteGotta love boys and their humor!
I know I shouldn't be smiling right now at Ty's creativity and humor, but I can't help myself. I think that the teacher does take herself a little too seriously, I mean come on. You are working with 13-year-old boys. I think a little note attached to his assignment to be signed by you would have been plenty if she wanted to bring it to your attention.
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you handled it though and I bet it did teach Ty a valuable lesson.
I think Ty was very creative and made up a name out of left field. The teacher is full of herself, another politically correct person, out of control.. There was no 'obscene' thoughts here. I commend Ty on his story.
ReplyDeletejlg
All things aside, it was kind of witty...
ReplyDeleteBut, should have only been for home/friend fun.
I think you chose an appropriate action in responding to his 13 YO boy humor.
that is down right DUMB. now is that for being inappropriate! That teacher needs to let her hair down and laugh a little.
ReplyDeleteThere are soooooo many more obscene version of names he could have used.
Such as Harry Sachs..
on a related note I used to work at a helpdesk and the caller stated their last name as Busch.. first name Harry.. I burst out laughing at the joke the man had made. I had asked for last name first.. so it took a split second for my inner 13 year old to take over.. and I was laughing so hard i had tears running down my face. He started laughing too.. thank heavens.. because then he said.. Honey.. seriously look me up in the system that is my name. it was..
who does that to their kid?????
Seriously he or she needs to get a sense of humor .. I am not defending him either (okay maybe a bit) BUT I dont see where you needed to be called about it .. a simple quiet conversation with Ty at the end of class telling him it wasnt funny and to re-do it would have been more effective .. hey what do I know I have no kids and I wasnt a teen aged boy
ReplyDeleteHA.... as a grandmother and an empty nester I find this hilarious. I bet the teacher laughed about it when she got home.
ReplyDeleteSorry. I think it's hilarious!!! How did you keep a straight face when you spoke with Ty regarding his "offense"??
ReplyDeleteStill love this! Of all the things I would of thought of that a 13 yr old boy could do this is nothing! If more people were this humorous the world would be a better place.
ReplyDeleteI still love it. The teacher should have handled it and had Ty tell you about it. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteThat's a cool pic. Were you on the bus when you took that picture? Too bad Ty's teacher doesn't have a sense of humor. She must be an old bitty.
ReplyDeleteI had tears of laughter at Ann Marie's story about Harry Busch. Hilarious!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I can see why she was a bit put off, but it's quite a stretch calling it 'obscene'. She was probably just offended because it seemed he wasn't taking the assignment seriously.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think it's hilarious.
But I don't think you should tell him that!
Cool texture, but the way.
Oh, and PS ~ Excellent consequence, imho.
ReplyDeleteTold you people would think it was funny... I wouldn't have held my composure as much as you did... I would have gotten really bitchy back. I like Harry Sachs... that's hilarious! I hate people who try to strip kids of humor. Life needs humor.
