Toes- A Mother's and a Daughter's

A daughter is a mother's gender partner, her closest ally in the family confederacy, an extension of her self.

Life: Ladybug had her last concert of the year the other night. We had to find her a dress and shoes as the choral director requires the children to look the part of young ladies and gentlemen for the night concert. This in and of itself is a HUGE hurdle for Ladybug. She HATES to be dressed up! Oh how she loathes fancy girl clothes and uncomfortable footwear! After many back and forth trips to the fitting room, a blue (turquoise-ish) sundress was finally chosen. Then it was off to find shoes. Ladybug decided to wear a pair of sandals that matched the color of the dress.

This, of course, meant that she had to have respectable toes. So, we painted her toenails...you guessed it...blue. They HAD to match the outfit. After she went to bed that night, I snuck into her bedroom, stole the polish out of her closet, and painted mine to match. I thought she would get a kick out of it! When I showed her mine in the morning, she cracked up and thought it was great.

Now, of course, I am stuck with bluish-greenish toes that resemble those that have been slammed in a door. You know that greenish-bluish color of a bruised toenail...yea, that same color is now painted, metallic no less, on all 10 of my piggies.

To celebrate our twenty aqua phalanges, we held a photo shoot featuring those bright beauties ;0)

About the photos: Shot with my Canon 5D on manual setting. First image: ISO 1000; f/2.8; 1/49 sec. Second Image: ISO 1000; f4.5; 1/25 sec. I underexposed one stop on both images as the skin was overexposing at the "normal" light meter reading. I used a texture called Muted6 by Amanda Clayton on both images. For the Polaroids, I used a free action I found a long time ago. I am sorry I don't have a link to that action, but I am sure you could find a similar one by Google-ing "free Polaroid action."

Weigh In: How do you think a relationship between a mother and daughter and a mother and son are different?

  3. I love the tooties shots!

No boys, so I can't weigh in on the differences - but I love my relationship with my girls!

  4. I love these shots! Since I have boy/girl twins, I could go on for hours. But I'll just say that they are different and the same all at once;)

  5. Fun toes! Sometimes I like to try and use a different and strange color when I paint my toes. Once I bought the ugliest shade of light green. I looked like I had alien toes.
I don't have a son so I don't really know what the differences are from experience.

  7. Way to make getting dressed up fun.

My girls are still developing their own personalities but I'm hopeful as they mature, they'll look at me as a Mom and a friend. Right now, I'm just their Mom and loving every minute.

  8. Wonderful toes and I love the nail color... I'd really have to take some time to think about and answer that question!

  9. Great toes!!!

And of course the relationships are different - and I think they are just because each child is different, regardless of sex.

  10. The difference is astounding...I don't have a clear choice, but both offer both positives and negative aspects.

I love those toes and the color. I wear matching polish to my flip flops!!!

  11. Love these photos. My girls and I have always viewed out toes as the perfect canvas to go crazy with and we use what ever funky colors that please us at the moment.
I have girls, no boys, so I really don't no what the differences would be but I wonder if maybe the sex of the child matters less when compared to the personality of the child?

  12. Since I don't have boys, I can't really answer. I will say that mother daughter relationships are incredibly complex, and they are the best when they're effortless. This effortlessness is not always possible with one of my daughters, but I continue to work at it... (how's that for irony?)

  14. I have something similar to this in my Flickr - Sarah and I did July 4th nails last year. :D Fun!

    How was the concert?

I haven't had the usual mother/son experience, so I can't really say much about the difference, although I do have Greg now.... He's more gentle with me than the girls are. He choses his words more carefully. I love teaching the girls about being women.
